When we arrived at the bluff, Trevor went down to the beach with the dogs while I took the dirt trail to the grave. I had little expectation that Naomi would make an appearance, but the odds were greater if I was alone. As I had before, I took a seat on a rock, looked out to the sea, and began to speak.

“Are you here, Naomi? It’s me. Amanda.”

I waited as the sound of the waves lulled me into a state of semicontentment despite my frustration at my inability to connect with Naomi. Even though I didn’t see or hear her, I could feel her lurking, so I proceeded as if she were listening. “Now that we’ve found your body, the police are looking into things. Unfortunately, we have a pretty long list of suspects. Unless we come across someone who knows what happened and is willing to talk, it might take us months to weed through them.” I sat in silence for a moment before I continued. “I’m sure remembering is hard for you. I can’t imagine how hard it must be. Someone you knew, possibly even cared for, ended your life, and that must be the worst kind of betrayal. Many people think it was your father who did it, the police included. I guess the idea has merit, considering his history.”

Again I waited for a sign from Naomi that she was there and listening. When she didn’t appear or speak, I began again. “Jeffrey Kline makes a good suspect as well. You were a child and he was a grown man. There was talk he traded his knowledge of music for your innocence.”

No, I heard in my mind. I still couldn’t see Naomi, but I could hear the echo of her voice. It sounded as if she was far away. As if she was speaking through a tunnel that echoed her thoughts rather than actually voicing them.

“No?” I asked. “No, he didn’t trade music lessons for sex, or no, he didn’t kill you?”

No, I heard again. This time the voice was clearer.

“I’m listening if you want to explain,” I said. I hoped she’d appear, but somehow, I doubted she would. It was important to be patient, not to scare her off. She certainly was a skittish ghost, though who could blame her? She’d lived her whole life trying to stay in the shadows.

Eventually, I heard a voice. “Mr. Kline was my friend. He was nice to me. He taught me to play the piano. He wouldn’t hurt me.”

I closed my eyes and focused on the sound of Naomi’s voice. I could hear a soft melody playing in the background. The haunting song could be an echo of her memory merging with my consciousness.

“So he didn’t ask for sex?”

“He was my friend.”

I noticed Naomi hadn’t really answered my question, but I let it go. At least for now. “If Mr. Kline didn’t hurt you, do you remember who did?”

“I have to go.”

And the voice and melody were gone. I was disappointed I hadn’t gotten more, but it was something.
